Understanding the Difference Between Psychotherapy and Recovery Coaching

Different types of support can serve different purposes, and finding the right fit matters.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a form of mental health treatment provided by appropriately qualified professionals. It may involve assessing and treating eating disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma-related difficulties, and other psychological concerns through evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

Psychotherapy can help individuals understand and address the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural processes contributing to their difficulties.

What is eating disorder recovery coaching?

Eating disorder recovery coaching focuses on providing compassionate, practical, and collaborative support as individuals navigate challenges with food, body image, movement, and recovery.

Rather than diagnosing or providing clinical treatment, coaching can help individuals explore their goals, identify everyday barriers, build supportive habits, strengthen motivation, and develop a greater sense of confidence in their ability to move forward.

At The Blue Bird Room, coaching is not about being told what to do or being expected to follow a perfect recovery path.

It's about having a space where you can talk openly, feel understood, and work toward meaningful changes at a pace that respects your individual circumstances.

Can I benefit from both?

Absolutely. For some individuals, coaching can complement psychotherapy, nutritional counselling, and medical care.

Others may be exploring concerns with food or body image for the first time and benefit from guidance in identifying what type of support is appropriate.

Eating disorders can involve serious psychological and physical health risks. Coaching does not replace specialized eating disorder treatment, medical monitoring, or nutritional care when these are needed.

What if I'm unsure which type of support I need?

You don't have to figure that out alone.

During an introductory conversation, we can discuss what you're hoping to gain from support, explain what coaching can and cannot offer, and consider whether The Blue Bird Room is an appropriate fit.

If your needs fall outside the scope of coaching, I can encourage you to connect with qualified professionals and appropriate resources.

You deserve support that meets your needs, wherever you are in your journey.

Come as you are. Grow at your own pace.
